Ok, so you’re looking for a photographer, it’s a minefield out there with prices ranging from a mere couple of hundred pounds to a few thousand pounds, so how do you find the right one? First of all you need to start looking within your budget, if you have put aside a set amount for your photographer stick to it, don’t look at ones that are under your budget to try and skimp and save money, after all your photography is a very important part, you want to be able to look back in years to come and cherish those memories. At the end of the day as the saying goes “You get what you pay for”. That’s not to say your going to get rubbish for a few hundred or amazing at a couple of thousand, you need to research the photographers you like.
Then you need to start looking and pick maybe three or four photographers that are in your budget and you like their work. You’ll need to know a few things when speaking with your photographer and you’ll need to ask a few questions, below are some of the questions you need to be asking.
- Are you insured?
- How long have you been a photographer?
- How many weddings have you shot?
- Is wedding photographer your main job?
- How many images from the day do we get?
- Do we have a licence to print?
- Do you use photoshop/lightroom?
- What equipment do you use and do you have back up camera, lenses?
- How long before we get to see our pictures?
Make sure you visit their website, have a good look around at all their work, if they don’t have a website then beware!
Do you like a particular style?
Traditional Wedding Photography:
This style of wedding photography usually involves rather a formal approach. The term doesn’t really refer just to lots of group shots but also to all the key moments, signing of the register, cutting the cake etc. The photographer will endeavour to get all these key images in a posed style and will have lots of experience in arranging group shots and posing you for portraits. The advantages of this style are that you can be pretty sure of what you will getand that the photographer will be very efficient and professional. It does however involve a great deal of control being given over on the day and the photographer will need to order guests around to get the photographs shot.
Contemporary Wedding Photography:
The contemporary style of wedding photography is a more artistic/ fashion approach. This style involves a less rigid, formal technique and focuses on beauty, fashion and posed images that are inspired by editorial fashion photography. The photographer is more likely to plan his shoot in advance and may visit the venue to choose locations for the pictures. The emphasis is placed more on interesting and artistic poses, clever use of light and locations and the images may well be re-touched and effects applied in post-production.
Reportage Wedding photography:
The photojournalistic approach to wedding photography has become increasingly popular in recent years. The emphasis is on more candid and unposed photographs that appear more natural and focus on telling the story of your wedding day. This approach has emerged in the digital era as the photographer will probably shoot hundreds of images and edit the photographs afterwards. The main thing to decide is the style of photography you like and how long you’d like to spend posing for photographs on the day.
Again there are a lot to choose from, your photographer should be able to offer you a wide choice of sizes, styles, coverings and paper types. You will need your photographer to show you these so you can feel them and see how they look. You may not want an album, nothing wrong with that, find a photographer that will supply your wedding photos to disc or usb only. The only drawback is the fact that your photographer builds albums on a regular basis, he/her knows what they are doing.
The most important part
Yes you have a budget you need to stick to, yes you like their work, they have a good reputation from previous couples but the most important thing above all else is the fact you like your photographer, you get along with him/her, you gel. Because if you dont, then believe me it will show in the end result.
